please explain how to invite members to a private group

I believe you need to be friends with them first. Then, when in your group admin you go to 'invite' you will see them listed in a grid.

And how do I know I’m in the group? Can you add people without them joining the group themselves?

I don't remember if they are automatically added. They might be. Maybe its with pages that they get an invite rather than automatically added. When you go to 'my groups' you will see 3 options. 1., the groups you are in. 2, suggested groups, and 3., groups you are admin of. you can see the groups you are in by choosing the groups you are in option.

I've had two friends share this happened to them:

I just tried to set up an account and I used my "xyz"@ email and it told me that email was already in use!

Anything I can do to help them resolve it?
