Probably the last issue that relatively decent people can agree is wrong and must be dealt with.

What? Human trafficking in small-town Wisconsin? Absolutely! I wanted to share a few things I have seen in and around my small town in the past months. Three incidents, each taken separately, would indicate a potential problem--and nothing reportable to authorities:

1) Some months back I noticed a late model SUV with a 30ish year old male in it parked in an obscure part of a grocery store parking lot. Another car pulled up and parked next to his. The late-teen aged female exited her car, got into the other car and they drove off together. Suspicious-- yes.

2) About a month ago my bride witnessed a large, windowless van with New York plates stop at a local Kwik-Trip. An woman exited the passenger door, open the back doors, and escorted a young teen girl into the store. Suspicious--Yes.

3) Last night I saw a man leave a local gas station, put some items into his car, and get into the car of a young lady who'd pulled in next to him. He immediately assumed a position with his back to the passenger door, slouched low. I didn't stick around to witness the completion of "the deal". Suspicious-- yes.

I believe that we have a very real human trafficking situation going on in our area. I believe that it is centered in the migrant community here-- a population that makes up a steady 20% of our local community. (Yes, in each case, the immigration status of the individuals would be questioned by Sheriff Joe.)

The question is, what do we do about it? Document times and places? Take down license plates? What is our role as good citizens who know when to "live and let live", and when to take appropriate action? What say you?

I've moved all my groups and pages here and encourage you to do the same or expand to CornerTable and let your friends, family and colleagues aware you have a presence here.

I also keep all my social content: family, school, church, and more here these days because it saves having to make a backup and it encourages people to visit here and not on FB.

Not only does this eliminate worry about losing content, but publishing the content more here, it gives me and others more reasons to focus on developing the community.

Just a reminder, and perhaps new to some of our new users, but cornertable is only a platform. You bring the content. We facilitate it. Similarly, you rely on other users for content--which means you want to bring your family and friends HERE. If they aren't here, you won't be here.

Kroger moving to all self-checkout:

There are reports saying that Kroger is piloting a 100% self-checkout store on February 17. The stores allow several check-out options while only paying 1 cashier per every 4+ registers. These cashierless machines could save millions of dollars a year. Plus, the number of checkout lines could increase without increasing cost and making waiting in lines rare.

For years, I have been conducting an experiment when I check out. First, I see how many cashiers actually look me in the eyes. Then I check to see how many people actually engage me in conversation. By engagement, I mean more than saying, "Did you find everything you were looking for today?" Rather, a good engagement includes a smile, they look me in the eyes, and then ask, "How is your day today" or "Do you have any plans for the weekend?" Finally, I give them tripple kudos if they personalize throughout the interaction and thank me for coming in. During my experiment, I tend to find older workers engage better. They get it! If you don't come to their line then they don't have a job. Most of the time at Wal-Mart (and most other places too), they see themselves as nothing more than someone who runs your item across the scanner and takes your money. Many times, they are more interested in others around them and not you.

I often will experiment hoping to offer engagement. If I approach them with a smile, look them in the eyes, and say their name, I am more likely to get a response back. However, most of the time they just think I am weird and they avoid me even more.

Cashiers add no value to the shopping experience. In fact, I believe they more often take away from the experience.

Then add to the fact that many people are increasing the minimum wage, which will require businesses to put in as much as 2x the going rate for the same cashier. Add onto that HR issues, accident rates, scheduling challenges and other liabilities of employing people, it makes sense that businesses are looking to add self-checkouts. A self-checkout machine never asked for a raise, demands time off, or causes employee problems due to gossip.

At that point, a $30,000.00 self-checkout machine is a cheap alternative.

Some people say that we should use cashiers so they can keep their job. However, good cashiers will keep their job. The stores will hire the best and the ones who are not as good, they will have to find a new job where they will have to provide value to the employer and the customer.

CONSTANTINE THE GREAT: A Defender of Christianity?

[A.D. 272 – 337] Many Christian scholars have given Roman Emperor Constantine the expressions “saint,” “thirteenth apostle,” “holy equal of the apostles”; while others describe Constantine as “bloodstained, stigmatized by countless enormities and full of deceit, . . . a hideous tyrant, guilty of horrid crimes.” Numerous confessing Christians have long thought of Constantine the…
