Here's another blog post in support of the petition circulating calling for racial justice in the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. While I don't deny that some bad practices occurred in the past, and maybe some still continue (not just targeting Blacks, though that's a topic for another day), I think this blog has a few logic failures.

"We have to take a minute and ask ourselves why black congregations exist within the synod at all. To be frank, it is because white Lutherans would not commune with black ones, not because of a doctrinal difference, but because of a difference in skin color. "

This may have been the case just after the Civil War (note I say "may" because the author presents no evidence) but another simple explanation is that Black congregations exist because Black neighborhoods exist. Lutheran churches (and schools) used to be established geographically near to the people they served.

My second issue with this blog is this. On the one hand, the author decries segregation by pointing to the existence of black congrgations, but on the other, he bemoans the closing of the two Synodical schools that focused on training Black teachers and pastors. Nothing prevents a Black student from going to any of the other Concordias.

Note, I am upset about the closing of Concordia University Selma, for many of the reasons the author discusses. I personally witnessed the start of the Concordia University system and the continual shift of focus away from training Lutheran pastors and teachers. I started college at "Concordia College" (whose legal name was still actually "Concordia Teacher's College" and graduated from "Concordia University Nebraska". When the university system started, I actually considered doing a semester at Concordia Selma (one of the perks of the system was that a student could do a semester at another Concordia and have the credits count the same as if you were at the home school), but they didn't have the courses I needed at the time. I wish now that I had done it anyway.

I firmly believe that we need more neighborhood schools and churches. We need to reach out to people where they are and address the issues and life experiences of those communities. However, I also have no problem with someone deciding their needs would be better served at another location.

In today's installment of "Words Mean Things", consider the current politically correct terminology for a person of minority descent: "Person of Color".

Even though this term is the current "non-offensive" vernacular, it is not far removed from the now highly offensive "colored person" or its shorted form "colored". I know of some Black Americans who hear these offensive terms in their mind whenever they are referred to as a "person of color". In fact, that's what I hear now when someone uses the phrase "person of color".

It makes one wonder just how much certain things have really changed, doesn't it?

At some point, we should probably have a discussion about the "spectrum" (Black -> Colored -> White).

Bible reading and journaling. Ah, my fav combination.

-Proverbs is def one of my fav books to read in the Bible. As I was reading a few chapters, I noticed how It really gives you the instructions on how to live a life pleasing to God. Lot of stuff struck out at me.

On a side note, I’ve been wanting to find those bibles with the mini side note section on the side of each page. So I could write down notes, reminders, etc. Sooo if anyone knows where I could find them, let me know please

Yes. This news article cherry picked some very mild complaints, compared to some of the ones I read from Concordia's Facebook. The interesting thing is, I've seen no further complaints. Previously, anything Concordia posted had a few people that would demand the video be taken down.

lol funny stuff. Checked some of the developer conversation about it. It is a known thing, for at least 3 years. For some reason he's dragging his heels on it. We'll put this on the list of things to deal with. Strange.
