Welcome new folks. Please remember this is not a multi-billion dollar operation. It won't have all the bells and whistles of FB, but it will have... freedom. In that spirit, remember that there are only 3 privacy settings for posts: Everyone, friends, and me. Check your privacy settings when you post. Use groups, pages, and forum posts to interact with the wider community, without necessarily 'friending' everyone. That may be a more secure way, anyway, right? But do what you want. Still, groups and pages are good routes to go! Again, welcome!

please explain how to invite members to a private group

I believe you need to be friends with them first. Then, when in your group admin you go to 'invite' you will see them listed in a grid.

And how do I know I’m in the group? Can you add people without them joining the group themselves?

I don't remember if they are automatically added. They might be. Maybe its with pages that they get an invite rather than automatically added. When you go to 'my groups' you will see 3 options. 1., the groups you are in. 2, suggested groups, and 3., groups you are admin of. you can see the groups you are in by choosing the groups you are in option.

GROUPS can be set to private/invite only.
Don't forget to change the privacy settings on your posts
