Jonah went through all that, because he didn’t want to go to the Ninevites and give them God’s message to repent.
It is quite possible that they were responsible for killing many near and dear to Jonah.
Nineveh was the Capital of the Assyrian Empire, actually the forerunner of a lot of Isis fighters, they were just as savage and ruthless.
Their God was Dagon, the fish god, ironic, considering Jonah's experience.
