The reason why I think the way I do is because I don't think people are kidding when they say things like this. Sure, the best possible construction would be that they are engaging in hyperbole, but wouldn't this say more about us then it would about them? Our willingness to interpret such comments in the best possible light does absolutely nothing to alter what he ACTUALLY SAID. Faced with such comments, we can A., dismiss it and take no action, because according to our OWN feelings he can't really mean what he says or B., take the necessary measures to defend yourself should such people show up on your doorstep.
