On this episode of "I Told You So, with Mike Rowe," we begin with a brilliant observation from the attached article by an excellent writer named Kevin Williamson.
Kevin writes...
"What human beings are genuinely compelled by is not rules but allegiance.
“Do I wear a mask in this situation?” is not the question that really drives people — the question that drives us is, “What kind of person am I if I wear a mask in this situation, and what would it say about me if I didn’t?”
For those keeping track at home, I wrote the same thing on this page, back in March of 2020.
"Wearing masks will prove to be very tricky," I wrote, "because for many, masks will come to signify all sorts of things that have nothing to do with science.
Just watch.
Those who now demand universal mask compliance in the name of safety, will insist on wearing them long after medical science says they aren't necessary."
I was shooting in Phoenix last week, when the CDC announced that people who have been vaccinated didn't need to wear a mask indoors.
Guests were delighted, but the hotel where I was staying simply couldn't get their minds around it. So corporate simply ignored the new guidance
. The staff kept yelling at guests to "mask up" when they walked through the lobby, but many of the guests refused.
In the restaurant, the manager reminded us, in a somewhat exasperated tone, to "mask up" on the way to the table.
"For the love of God," I said. "Why? We've all been vaccinated, the table is ten feet away, and nobody seated is wearing a mask."
The manager didn't have an answer. But the attached article does. Give it a look. Lot's of food for thought...
