C. S. Lewis said theology was like a map. It's a lot more fun to walk on the beach (religious experience) than to read the map. But the map might come in handy if you want to get to America.
Too many American Evangelicals are pretty much committed to trying to cross the ocean in a canoe with no map and no compass.
Bad theology--whether bad because it is unfaithful to Scripture or bad by being faithful while being boring and irrelevant to life (which is simply another way of being unfaithful) is often cited as the excuse for this attitude.
But the cure for bad theology is not ignorance.
It is good theology.
Willfully maintained ignorance is just another way of being unfaithful.
