We all like knowing what's going on and there's nothing fundamentally wrong with the news.
However, it helps to understand some of the pressures on you and those reporting to you. Here are two:
1. We like to hear anything that confirms what we already believe and disregard facts that don't align with us.
2. News sources (even ones with the purest intentions) have to stay in business and extreme and polarizing headlines and stories tend to garner more attention and engagement.
These tendencies stand independent of political party or ideology.
