Politics and Christianity:
As we progress through political seasons, I become much more political closer to election time. However, after election season, I return to focusing on how theology and politics collide.
Thoughts over the past few weeks:
1. Biden is for funding abortions overseas, and there is a move to remove the Hyde Amendment, which would allow the government to fund abortions in the states.
2. Bruce Springsteen appeared in an ad that invoked Christian symbols calling for unity in the United States. Using Christianity or Christian symbols has been done for centuries, including Thomas Payne's "Common Sense" to Ronald Reagan's "City on the Hill," and Trump's standing in front of a church holding a Bible. When most on the left and the right use symbols of Christianity to "unite," they usually do not want a true vibrant doctrinally rich Christianity but a shallow facade that hopes to invoke some emotion devoid of Christianity's richness. It is a form of blasphemy that uses the Lord's name in vain. Christian unity unites around doctrine rooted in the person and work of Jesus and a high view of God's church. There is no unity unless Christ himself unifies through His atoning sacrifice.
3. The Supreme Court ruled that churches in California could meet up to 20% of the church building's capacity. While it is a win against the radical California Governor, it still violates some who believe they must gather with the church. A Christian must be dedicated to gathering together, even if they must violate the 20% limit.
4. In Denmark, the state may require some churches to submit their sermons to the government before they are delivered. If the sermons are not in Danish, the churches are required to translate the sermons expected to cost the churches millions of dollars. The law is designed to attack Muslim churches, but this same law could also impact Christian Churches. Religious freedom should be granted to all, and not just a few.
5. The growing opposition from social media against Biblical ideas, especially around gender, is heating up. Though not validated by me, it is reported that some have been banned because they refer to a transgender person by the gender they were born with, not their transitioned gender. Christianity believes your physical reality is also your reality. From the beginning, Christianity opposed other such attempts including Gnosticism. Opposing Gnosticism's use of the inner man versus the physical, Christianity says we cannot pit the inner versus the outer reality without violating core Biblical teaching.
For that reason, embracing an inner reality of the person as opposed to the physical reality is heretical.
