I finished the Metaxas biography on Bonhoeffer. I really enjoyed the book, even though I have several issues. 1st, Bonhoeffer was not a conservative evangelical, at best he was in the same vein as Karl Barth (the friendship is mentioned in the book). 2nd, I don't think Mataxas did enough to bring Bonhoeffer's internal struggle to light. Bonhoeffer was a patriot and hated the Nazi's but his part in the plan to assassinate Hitler caused him great consternation and grief. All in all I enjoyed the book and would recommend it. However, if you were going to read a biography on Bonhoeffer, I would recommend a book by Bonhoeffer's friend and brother-in-law Eberhard Bethge. #dietrichbonhoeffer #biography

Thank you for the book recommendation and will look into it. Bonhoeffer, while I have referred to him as an example of a pastor standing up, was far from perfect. The biography is good, but as you shared, didn't fully capture Bonhoeffer, but I began to realize and this is coming as an academic snob, people don't fully either research or have a well-rounded liberal education to understand the complexity of people and issues, nor enough familiarity of people.

There are people who don't even know who Barth is, especially on a foundational level and his influence which helps bring a better understanding of what makes people who they are.
