Sorry for the paywalled source. The New York Times ran an article claiming that a pro-Ukrainian organization, but not associated with the Ukrainian government, sabotaged the Nordstream pipelines according to US intelligence officials. The article also notes that no US or UK personnel were involved. And the divers were highly experienced but not working for military or intelligence services.

More information from a German source. They claim to have identified the boat used (a rental from a company in Poland owned by two Ukrainians). They claim the team was 5 men and 1 woman (boat captain, two divers, two divers assistants, and a doctor) who used professionally forged passports. No real indication of nationality of the sabotage team.

The article is paywalled and in German. Google auto-translate did a good job on the article, though.

so it would take more than experienced divers to do this. they would have to be proficient in explosives, be able to access those explosives and transport them undetected, as well as some kind of detonation protocol, such as with timers or what not. They would not want to be in the area when they blew. Presumably, both were set to blow well in advance of them blowing, so they wouldn't be on the sea at all once they went kabam. On top of all of this, they'd need some technical knowledge on the pipelines itself, and how to find them each, eg, their route. I assume some major financial outlay for this.

I guess its not out of the realm of possibility for amateurs to pull it off, but it would make more sense if they were proxies, and I think even more sense if it was a specially trained military unit operating under the government that had a president that swore up and down that the pipelines wouldn't stay up if Russia invaded. Ie, Biden.
