My point is if you don’t ‘let me live my life’ you need to be stopped. I think many totalitarians (mainly communists & Islamists today) take advantage of a free society constantly admonishing others about a principle that they never respect themselves.

I think you are right about how totalitarians behave, and that they must be stopped. In my experience with libertarians, nearly all of them believe that there are proper roles for 'government,' just (obviously) much more limited and scaled back. For example, I've never met a libertarian who thought we should tolerate murder. A true anarchist would have to tolerate murder; I doubt there are many that do.

I personally categorize myself as a 'constitutionalist libertarian,' on the idea that individual liberties should be maximized and transgressed upon only with the very high bar the limits proscribed by the Constitution obeyed. Of course, the Constitution also recognizes that it is the government itself that could be doing the murdering, and of course the Constitution has been almost completely ignored in practice, and is easily set aside. I wrote a whole book about this.

But, not many libertarians would consider me a true libertarian, so I'm not defending them because I am one. I'm just saying that my experience with libertarians doesn't mesh well with how I understand the meme.

Murder is the extreme ultimate ‘gulag for dissidents’ stage … there are lots of intermediate steps to that which I feel libertarians and conservatives in general tend to be very passive about in the name of freedom.
For example, If I know someone wants to kill me, I am not going to allow him to even get in a place where he can do it with ease; but we tend to wait till he has actually started stabbing us and then try to give ourselves blood transfusions instead !
Libertarians/conservatives voting for some obscure candidate in the last election when they very well knew what a disaster Biden was going to be is an example.
